Irish Language Crash Course: Words to Warm the Heart

Date

By Wellness Tours Ireland

There’s a certain magic in hearing the Irish language — Gaeilge — spoken aloud. It’s lyrical, full of history, and deeply tied to the land and people of Ireland. Even learning a few words can open doors, spark smiles, and deepen your connection to the places you visit.

Why Learn a Little Gaeilge?

While English is spoken everywhere, Irish is woven into our culture, from road signs to pub toasts. Making the effort to learn a few phrases shows respect for the heritage of the place — and often leads to warmer, more memorable interactions.

Five Friendly Words & Phrases

  • Dia duit (DEE-a gwit) — “Hello”
Literally means “God be with you.” The reply is Dia is Muire duit — “God and Mary be with you.”
  • Sláinte (SLAWN-cha) — “Cheers”
You’ll hear this in pubs across Ireland when raising a glass.
  • Go raibh maith agat (guh rev MAH agut) — “Thank you”
A simple way to express gratitude to someone who’s helped you.
  • Craic (crack) — “Fun, good times”
As in, “What’s the craic?” meaning, “What’s happening?” or “How are you?”
  • Fáilte (FALL-cha) — “Welcome”
A word you’ll see often — on signs, shop doors, and in the hearts of the people you meet.

Tips for Pronunciation

Irish spelling can look intimidating, but don’t be afraid to give it a go. Locals will appreciate the effort, even if you stumble. Speak slowly, listen to native speakers, and remember — confidence is key.

Learning on the Road

On our tours, you’ll have plenty of chances to hear and use these words — whether chatting with a shop owner, greeting your morning yoga group, or toasting over dinner in a cosy pub. It’s these little exchanges that make a trip feel personal and unforgettable.
